If you were expecting Lost to be wrapped up nice and clean and end like the 24 series, then you would’ve been sorely disappointed. If you were expecting the final episode of Lost to show Jacob sitting around a campfire with Jack going over the island’s owner manual, explaining each and every mystery of the series, then you would’ve been sorely disappointed.
I listened to the weekly podcast of the executive producers and they have been saying for months that the finale would not answer each and every question and that it would actually cause the conversation to continue. So, I guess you could say that my expectations were already set before sitting down to watch the finale.
Having said that, and having had time to digest and reflect on the finale, I thought it was incredible. I thought it was a beautiful way to wrap up a show that for 6 years was more about relationships than mysteries. I thought the “awakenings” that the characters had in the flash-sideways paid a wonderful homage to the history of the show and some of the most memorable moments.
So what do I think happened in the finale? I don’t have all the answers, and these are only my opinions so go easy on me… Since the beginning of this final season, we’ve been dealing with two worlds: 1) the island post-atomic bomb and 2) the ‘flash-sideways’ of what happened to our characters had the island never existed. I believe everything that happened on the island actually happened to our beloved characters in their real (or TV) lives. What we didn’t know was that the flash-sideways story line actually took place many years in the future after all of the characters had died, including Hurley who could’ve died centuries later. We saw some die on the island (like Jack), and some died years later for reasons we don’t know after leaving the island (like Kate and Sawyer). When Jack died on the island at the end, the last thing he saw was the plane carrying his remaining friends to safety. He had succeeded… he had passed the test and been deemed worthy to enter the after-life. There were others who did not pass the test and their souls ended up stuck on the island like Michael and all the other whispers we heard. They were not allowed to “move on”.
We know that prior to Oceanic 815 ever crashing on the island, all of our characters had issues. The flash-sideways I believe was how each of our characters would’ve *wanted* to live their lives given a chance to do it again and they were unknowingly in this ‘holding world’ until they were able to establish their memories/relationships from the island. Once they were awakened to those memories then they were able to “move on” to eternity together. As Christian Shepard said, the reason those particular people in the Church were linked together was because they represented the most important part of each others lives… as in their time on the island.
My belief is that the show was trying to put across the idea that when we are long gone from this place, relationships matter because ultimately we will spend eternity with the people we loved while we were alive on Earth. I’m sure people much smarter than me will be able to poke holes in my theories, but I think that is what made the finale so brilliant… it is causing so much conversation. Any time a TV show or movie makes you stop and think, then you’ve got a good show. This series has kept me thoroughly challenged and entertained for 6 years.
I will miss Lost.
P.S. This show did not sway in any way my belief that Jesus is still Lord and the only way to spend eternity in Heaven is to have a relationship with Him. There are not enough good deeds or passed tests that can get us there… only by knowing Him.

you don’t know how bad your profile picture is until you see it on the huge center screen at Fellowship Church. Good gosh that’s bad.
